This is a striking set of wins—a very big surprise, big upset. Some very extreme views from these candidates that voters were able to get their heads around. But this is a very unique electorate. The DSA's ambition is that this could translate to other big cities, but I don't think anyone expects this to translate to typical suburban districts where most Americans live.

There will be a very vocal, far-left contingent in Congress as a result, but it's only so far for the entire party.

Assuming he wins the Speaker's gavel, he'll have a real challenge—a very fractious caucus. In opposition he's done a good job keeping Democrats together, but that's running the House on easy mode. When it comes to doing something affirmative, it's a real challenge, especially given how policy-light the Democratic campaign is this year.

He doesn't have the track record that Pelosi had as an untested new leader.

That first meeting between Mamdani and Trump went strikingly well. They seem simpatico in certain ways but are not actual political allies. President Trump will have no compunction in teeing off on the extreme views of these candidates. He wants to run a midterm campaign against Democrats being extreme and out of touch on immigration and crime.
